What is Headline rate?

In short

The headline rate is the advertised interest on a savings account, quoted as a yearly percentage.

Savings pages put their best number at the top, and that number is the headline rate. It is an annual percentage, either the AER, which already includes compounding, or the nominal rate, which does not. Two accounts can show the same headline rate and still pay out differently, so the basis matters as much as the figure.

The rates shown here are as stated by each provider. ABB Bank advertises the highest of the set on its classic savings account, while ABA Bank shows a band starting at 0% to 1.25%. ABANCA lists 2% on its remunerated account, and 1822direkt shows 3.5% on its overnight savings account. Check the date and the basis before you compare.
