      About Top debit cards compared

A debit card spends what is already in your account, so the questions that decide it are narrow: what the account charges each month, what a foreign purchase costs, whether cash machine withdrawals come free, and how you reach someone when a card is blocked. The monthly fee is not what separates these cards, since every member in the list has a monthly fee of nothing, so the real trade-off sits with currency spending, cash machine allowances, security and support. Wise holds 40 currencies for a small FX fee, bunq holds 8 across a wider band, and Starling and Monzo Flex keep the FX fee at nothing while offering a virtual card. A few cards add rewards on top, and VaultLeap takes a self-custody approach to the account. Where two cards look the same on price, the deciding factor is often the card network or how many ways you can reach help.

      How we picked

We score every brand on three parts: cost at 35%, offer at 25% and trust at 40%. Cost covers the monthly fee and the foreign exchange fee, because those are the charges that quietly leave the account. Offer covers what changes daily use, such as the number of currencies held, cash machine allowances, virtual cards, rewards and travel features. Trust covers how the account is run, which legal entity holds the money, the provider's home country, the card network and the number of support channels offered. Every figure is taken from the provider's own materials: plan and pricing pages for fees, product and feature pages for currencies and card extras, imprint and legal pages for the entity and its country, and help pages for support. Partner brands are listed first and ordered by score among themselves, with the remaining brands following in score order, so a partner position reflects a commercial relationship as much as a score. Statistics quoted below describe the whole category of debit cards, not one provider.

      How we rank

      What to look for

What the account charges each month
Account fees across this ranking centre on €0, so treat any card charging monthly as the exception and read which plan the charge applies to. The wider set of cards we track runs €0 to €83.23.
      What a foreign purchase costs
The foreign exchange figure to compare is 1%. Anything sitting above that on a card you use abroad adds up quickly, and holding many currencies only helps if the conversion rate is good.
      Cash machine withdrawals
Free withdrawals across this ranking centre on €0, so an allowance on a plan is the exception rather than the norm. Check the figure before you rely on cash.
      Card network and acceptance
Visa accounts for 59.2% of the cards here and Mastercard for 35.1%, so the network is a preference more than a decider for everyday use.
      Ways to reach support
Phone support appears on 78.7% of the ranking, chat on 35.5% and a help centre on 73.1%. A card reachable by email alone still works, but more slowly when you are abroad.

      Frequently asked questions

Which of these debit cards costs nothing each month?+

Every one of them. bunq charges €0 on its free plan, Wise charges £0, and Starling's current account is £0. The same goes for Monzo Flex at £0 and for the US cards from Varo, Chime and Upgrade. The difference between them shows up in the foreign exchange fee and in what the account adds, not in the monthly charge.

Which card is cheapest for spending in another currency?+

Several charge no foreign exchange fee at all. Starling, Monzo Flex, Varo and Chime all list 0%, and Virgin Money lists 0%. Wise holds 40 currencies for a fee of 0.1%, which suits frequent travel. VaultLeap charges 0.5% across 3 currencies, while Upgrade's fee of 3% is the steepest here.

Which of these cards has no phone line for help?+

Support reach varies. bunq offers email and help centre only, so a blocked card is handled by email and the help centre, and VaultLeap runs on email. Wise, Starling, Varo, Chime, Virgin Money, Upgrade and Monzo Flex all list a phone line alongside chat or a help centre. Starling is also the only member here to add a community channel.

Are any of these balance transfer cards?+

No. Every card in this ranking is listed as a debit card, so it spends money already held in the account rather than carrying a balance you can move in. A balance transfer product is a credit card, and none of the members listed here is one, which is why a credit check does not appear in this comparison.

Which cards give rewards on everyday spending?+

Rewards come from Varo's secured card, Chime, Virgin Atlantic and Upgrade, all of which list rewards among their features, and Upgrade publishes a cashback rate of 2%. Cashback accounts for 43.5% of the ranking. The other members compete on currency features instead, such as Monzo Flex with 38 currencies and a virtual card.

Which card holds the most currencies?+

Wise holds the widest currency list here at 40, with Monzo Flex close behind on 38. bunq holds 8 and VaultLeap 3. The count only matters if you travel or receive money in another currency, and the fee you pay on conversion matters more than the count itself.
