Loans: the company behind it

The brand on an advert is rarely the company you sign with, so here is how to check the legal entity, home market, licences and support options of six lenders.

The company behind the advert

A loan is a promise made by a legal person, and the name on the advert is often only a trading name. Read the contract before you compare anything else, because that document tells you who is actually borrowing your money and who you complain to if payments go wrong.

Abhi appears under its own name but contracts as ABHI (PRIVATE) LIMITED. Accessifi presents a modern Irish brand while the entity is Leinster Credit Limited. Acorn Finance trades in a friendly style on one hand and operates as Headway Sales Inc. DBA Acorn Finance on the other, so the paperwork name will not match the advert name. Absa Ghana Instant Loan sits inside Absa Bank Ghana LTD, and Access Financial Services operates as Access Financial Services Limited.

A trading name can be changed, moved or retired while the company behind it keeps its history. If a lender restyles the app, the register entry and the review page are the places that stay still. The Abhi and Accessifi pages show the same kind of detail for each name.

Home country decides the rules you get

Where a lender sits shapes the whole relationship. The home market sets the regulator, the way complaints are handled, the dispute route and the credit reporting practice, so two lenders with similar rates can sit under very different safeguards.

Abhi is based in PK, Absa Ghana Instant Loan in GH, Access Financial Services in JM, Accessifi in IE, Achieve in US and Acorn Finance in US.

For a reader in the UK or Europe, a foreign home market is not automatically a warning sign, but it is a reason to look for a local registration. Domestic regulation gives you a local complaints body and a route to the courts, while an overseas entity can leave you chasing an answer across borders. Check both the home market and the market you actually live in before you sign anything.

Licences tell you what the company may do

A licence is permission to do one specific thing in one specific place, and the wording matters more than the presence of a number. Read what the permission covers before you assume it covers your loan.

Abhi holds a Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan licence, listed as SC/NBFC-219/APL/IFS/2021-02. Acorn Finance publishes a set of United States permissions, including an Oregon Consumer Finance License, 1817022, a California Department of Business Oversight Finance Lenders License, 60DBO-83199, an Arizona Consumer Lender License, CL-1007809, a Connecticut Small Loan Company License, SLC-1817022, a Nevada FID Installment Loan Company License, IL11259, a New Hampshire Small Loan Lender License, 23516-SM, a New Jersey Consumer Lender License, 2104813, a North Dakota Money Broker License, MB103671, an Oklahoma Credit Service Organization License, CSO00526, a Pennsylvania Consumer Discount Company License, 74960, a Rhode Island Loan Broker License, 20224488LB and a Tennessee Industrial Loan and Thrift Company Registration, 173201.

Two entries in that list are not lending permissions, and reading them as if they were would be a mistake. An Illinois Residential Mortgage License, MB.6761613, covers residential mortgages rather than everyday personal loans. A North Carolina Loan Broker Filing Registration, 339, is a filing with a regulator rather than a lending licence, and a broker arranges loans that someone else makes. Ask which one applies to the product you are being offered. The full set sits on the Acorn Finance review page.

How long the company has been trading

A founding year is a rough proxy for how much of a record the company has, and it costs nothing to check. It is not a quality score, and a young company can be well run, but a long trading history does mean the entity has survived earlier shocks.

On this measure the spread is wide. Access Financial Services was founded in 2000 and Achieve in 2002, while Acorn Finance dates from 2018 and Abhi is the newest of the group at 2021.

Pair the year with the entity name. A young company with a long standing legal entity is a different proposition from a young company with a young entity, and the founding year alone will not tell you which you are looking at.

What happens when something goes wrong

Support channels tell you how a problem will be handled and how fast. A lender with phone, email and a written help centre gives you more routes than one limited to phone and email, and a help centre also leaves a record of the answer in writing.

Abhi offers email and phone, email and phone. Achieve offers phone and email, phone and email. Absa Ghana Instant Loan offers phone, email and a help centre, phone, email and help centre. Access Financial Services offers email, phone and a help centre, email, phone and help centre, Accessifi offers email, phone and a help centre, email, phone and help centre, and Acorn Finance offers email, phone and a help centre, email, phone and help centre.

Before you accept a loan, find out which channel handles a payment you cannot make, and ask for the answer in writing. That single step is more useful than comparing small differences in headline rates, because an unreachable lender turns a hard month into a serious one. You can see the contact picture for each name on the Access Financial Services and Achieve review pages.

A section by section comparison routine

Work through the same four headings for every lender, in the same order, and the choices narrow down quickly.

Start with identity. Record the legal entity and the home country, and check that the entity on the contract matches the one on the advert. Then check permissions: read the licence wording, not just the number, and confirm it covers the product being offered and your own market. Next, note the founding year and the support channels. Finally, only then compare the cost of the credit on the wider rankings, where you will find the Loans, Personal loans and Payday and short-term loans shortlists.

Doing it this way keeps the paperwork checks ahead of the price, which is the right order. A lender that looks cheap until you read the entity, the licence and the support options is often the more expensive loan once trouble arrives.
